The Jacksonville Jaguars ‘clear house’

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been having themselves a day for the wrong reasons, or right?

The Jaguars have released many starting players including CB Ronald Darby, TE Evan Engram, and WRs Josh Reynolds and Devin Duvernay. The front office has been busy all day, seemingly “clearing house.”

Besides the players listed above being cut, a more shocking move took place today as star wide receiver Christian Kirk was traded to the Houston Texans for a seventh round pick. Yes, a seventh round pick. Yes, divisional rival Houston Texans. Kirk is not a bad receiver and found himself as the number one receiver, at times, for the Jaguars. Kirk is worth a lot more than a seventh round pick, but with these moves made by the Jaguars today, they may be planning for the future.

Now what does this mean for the Jaguars? Well, they find themselves behind first year head coach, Liam Coen. He isn’t taking his first year lightly as he cut multiple players before his first season even started. After going 3-14 in the 2024 season, the Jaguars clearly need to change something. Is this that change?

No, this is indeed a change but more importantly this is a giant risk for a first year head coach. They may have a secret plan that we all have no idea about, but from my perspective this hurts the team a lot. You have a very talented young quarterback in Trevor Lawerence, he needs weapons. His weapons now: Gabe Davis and solid rookie Brian Thomas Jr. Clearly the Jaguars should target receivers in the upcoming draft, but that could still not be enough. Lawrence has shown signs of great development, this is where you take off with him.

There are some good things about this “house clearing.” They have a whole lot of money now. Their cap space is wide open to target some great free agents come March 12. There are a few great receivers you can get there to help Lawrence. We saw a great rookie campaign from Thomas Jr. He just needs some more years under him. Again, this could be a very intelligent secret plan coach Liam Coen and his front office are brewing up.

All in all, the Jaguars have been suffering for the past few seasons, only reaching the playoffs once in the last seven seasons. This is a massive change, it can work out surprisingly great or add to the more insufferable seasons. One thing is certain, more drama has been added to this 2025 offseason.
