Multiple teams come to mind as Nick Chubb is set to ‘hit free agency’
It has been a stressful offseason for the Cleveland Browns and their fans. Starting off with the threat of losing their best player for the past years in Myles Garrett. News is now breaking that Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb will test Free Agency, beginning on March 12th. This was first brought into the NFL world when reported by Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry.
Chubb re-signed with the Browns back in July of 2021, after coming off his rookie contract. He signed for 3 more years worth $36.6 million. It’s now 2024, and there is no sight of the Browns working any extension with Chubb.
Injury has to be playing a huge factor in the decision process for GM Andrew Berry and other teams that may have interest. Dating all the way back to his college career in Georgia, Chubb suffered a terrible injury where he tore his PCL, MCL, and LCL in his left knee. Truthfully, the impact of that injury never went away for him. More recently, he injured that same left knee against the Steelers in 2023, and was sidelined an entire season. Chubb hasn’t played a full season of football in two years, this is no doubt very concerning. I don’t see the Browns going all out to re-sign Chubb this offseason.
Regardless of that unfortunate information, Nick Chubb definitely proved himself to be on the greatest backs in the NFL. This is why multiple teams' ears should’ve flown up as soon as news of him hitting the market dropped. Here’s just a few:
Minnesota Vikings
First team to come to mind is the Minnesota Vikings. This is perfectly set up for the Vikings, as they will be possibly losing star running back Aaron Jones as he is set for Free Agency himself. Minnesota is coming off a great season capped off by reaching the playoffs. Although losing to the LA Rams in round one, they finished second in the NFC North and put up an impressive record at 14-3. Likely to start J.J. Mccarthy in his first NFL season, the Vikings should be looking more to the run game taking pressure off the young quarterback. With that in mind, look no further than Nick Chubb as your running back.
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas is another contending NFC team with a need in the running back position. Likely losing starting running back Rico Dowdle to Free Agency, Cowboys will be looking at options. Many believe they will target Ashton Jeanty in the upcoming draft, and who better to learn from than Nick Chubb if he is drafted. Dallas has their star receiver in Ceedee Lamb, but hasn’t had that constant ground threat ever since Zeke lost his prime. Chubb can be the key to unlock that high powered Cowboys offense again. In his own words Dak Prescott has said the Cowboys are “very close” to the reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles. Almost everyone in the world doesn’t believe this, but if this is true the addition of Nick Chubb should skyrocket the Cowboys.
Los Angeles Chargers
This is a team that I thought would be very interesting to watch with the addition of Nick Chubb. Coming off a great season and making the playoffs, the Chargers offense looked young and hungry. At the start of the season, many thought how the Chargers would look behind returning Jim Harbarugh as their new coach, and it did not disappoint. The team showed a lot of promise, but they are potentially losing a supporting factor to Free Agency in J.K. Dobbins. Enter Nick Chubb. After recently acquiring Ezekial Elliott at the start of the off-season, it is clear the Chargers still need that starting running back to replace Dobbins. Chubb will provide that heavy rushing attack partnered with an accurate passing game behind Justin Herbert. Coach Jim Harbaugh can make another strong run in year 2 as head coach if he can land Nick Chubb in Free Agency.
